Thanks grrlie! This was a blast!
Go to Wikipedia and pull up Billboard's Hot 100 list (or the UK Singles Chart if you're from across the pond). List the number one song the week of your birthday for each year. Explain any impression or connection you may have with the song. And if you feel the urge, link to YouTube.
Note that I switched to the Billboard Modern Rock list starting with 1989. Why? Because this is what I was listening to, not the Hot 100.
- Ray Stevens - The Streak: possibly the most annoying song in the world.
- Earth, Wind & Fire - Shining Star: a bit better than the streak but not much.
- Wings - Silly Love Songs: honestly don't think I've ever listened to Wings.
- Stevie Wonder - Sir Duke: can't recall this one either.
- Wings - With a Little Luck - what is with it with Wings & my bday?
- Peaches & Herb - Reunited - while I didn't enjoy it, I remember it on 8 track :(
- Blondie - Call Me - still 1 of my faves by them, yes, mom had this on 8 track also
- Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes: was fascinated with this from the moment I heard it, loved her raspy voice. Probably lead to my Johnette Napolitano fascination.
- Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder - Ebony & Ivory: Not really one for sentimental songs.
- David Bowie - Let's Dance: A god, not much more needs to be said.
- Lionel Richie - Hello: couldn't stand this as my mother chose it as a song to relate to someone she had a bad relationship with.
- Simple Minds - (Don't You) Forget About Me - who didn't love Breakfest Club? (although I don't think I was able to see it until much later on cable reruns.
- Whitney Houston - Greatest Love of All: still makes me cringe when I hear it because of so many bad renditions in talent shows.
- U2 - With or Without You: took a bit longer for me to like U2, think I came around with Rattle and Hum.
- Gloria Estefan - Anything For You: um, this is where I change to modern rock because I can't stand this
- The Cure - Fascination Street: The video made me appreciate boys in makeup and quickly started the Robert Smith posters on the walls. Still one of my favorite albums.
- Midnight Oil - Forgotten Years: never really a MO fan.
- Simple Minds - See the Lights: don't recall this one.
- The Charlatans - Weirdo: remember dancing to this at the all ages night club, Off Limits in Clearwater. Great stuff!
- New Order - Regret: No matter how much I try, I can't really bring myself to like New Order.
- Live - Selling the Drama: One of the best concerts I've seen. So much energy and passion.
- Better Than Ezra - Good: Eh, not really...
- The Cranberries - Salvation: Again the love of female vocalists. She is AMAZING live. I've never understood how such a huge voice can come out of such little grrls.
- Third Eye Blind - Semi-Charmed Life: catchy tune, but could live without.
- Fastball - The Way: surprisingly liked this, but this generally marks the departure of most music I enjoyed.
- Lit - My Own Worst Enemy: Don't remember.
- 3 Doors Down - Kryptonite: a guilty pleasure, good stuff.
- Staind - It's Been Awhile: could take it or leave it, nothing spectacular.
- Unwritten Law - Seein' Red: don't think I've ever heard it. Not really my thing.
- Audioslave - Like a Stone: LOVE Chris Cornell, but this, not so much.
- Jet - Cold Hard Bitch: Jet rocks!
- Green Day - Holiday: Again the fascination with boys in makeup comes full circle.
- Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California: Prefer their older stuff, but will take this over much of the commercial crap any day.
- Linking Park - What I've Done: yes, a guilty pleasure.
- Weezer - Pork and Beans: um, yeah, no thanks.
**It should probably be noted that I honestly haven't really listened to the radio since the 90s. Briefly when doing data entry in early 2000 but not much since then. If the radio is on, it's an 80s station. I am totally a product of my generation, really not caring for much other than stuff produced in the 80s & 90s, with few exceptions, most of which don't get much radio play or are not loved by the masses.**
